Iffley Road Worthing Drirelease top review

www.iffleyroad.com £85

The Worthing is an excellent lightweight long-sleeved top for cool spring or autumn runs. The half-zip provides good ventilation and the small pocket holds a key securely. The fabric is soft and comfortable and the classic styling really stands out. The cut is fairly slim, the fabric is soft and the quality is high – but so is the price!

Verdict: 8/10
A classic-looking top that's great for cooler runs.

Aussie Grit flint long sleeve review

www.aussiegritapparel.com £67

A nice top that moves with you as you run – perhaps no surprise given it was the brainchild of Formula 1’s Mark Webber, a man who clearly has high demands from his apparel. It does wick and breathe well, but you'll want the weather to be on the cooler side. Definitely one for late autumn and then all winter long.

Verdict: 8/10
Start hoping for cooler conditions – perfect.

Alpkit Koulin Trail review

www.alpkit.com £25

The Koulin Trail carries the slogan ‘wear more, wash less’ thanks to the application of silver-based treatment Polygiene. The body-mapped mesh panels under the arms keep it breathable and odour-free, and the rear pocket is handy for keys and cash – although a zip would make it feel more secure. But at this price, it's hard to fault.

Verdict: 9/10
Does what it’s supposed to do at a fantastic price.

Tribesports Engineered Zip Tee

www.tribesports.com £50

This shirt is ultra-light and fitted due to its stretchy polyamide material. It has a sporty look, reflective strips on front and back, a bright yellow zip and useful thumb-holes. The fabric is light and breathable, making it great for slower runs or as a pre-race top. After a few weeks of heavy use it still looks like new, giving it a very durable feel.

Verdict: 8/10
A great all-rounder that's lightweight and built to last.

SPRAYWAY KARA Half-Zip Top

www.sprayway.com £50

A lightweight base layer with all the natural benefits of merino wool. It's odour-resistant and does a great job of moving moisture away from your skin to keep you cool. It's also super soft with a design that makes it ideal for both running and casual wear. The Kara could easily be paired with a waterproof outer if you need to layer up.

Verdict: 10/10
Really can’t be faulted, and for merino it’s a good price too.

Montane Dart Zip-Neck review

www.montane.co.uk £32.39

Featuring powerful odour-resisting Polygiene (it’ll go a month between washes), the Dart is a soft-feeling top. The wicking properties are great and it'll work as a layer or solo shirt in all but the most brutal conditions. It may be a little heavy for super-hot weather, but it's well suited to most British hill and mountain conditions.

Verdict: 9/10
Good shirt, great price, ready for most conditions.

Ronhill Matrix Long-sleeve Top review

www.ronhill.com £55

Made from a fairly thick, stretchy, dimpled material, this warm top breathes and wicks well. It's suitable for spring or cooler summer days and is water-resistant in light showers. The small, zipped pocket is big enough for keys or cash, and the fold-over cuffs will keep your hands warm in the cold. Relaxed fit, but the material is quite clingy.

Verdict: 8/10
Warm, breathable, wicks well, but needs a bigger pocket.

New Balance Heat Half-zip review

www.newbalance.co.uk £65

Soft to the touch, this is the kind of long sleeve that serves two roles. On cooler mornings it’s the top of choice, but it also works well as a layer over a thin t-shirt. It then provides good breathable performance for most conditions. And yes, we admit we even use it for everyday casual wear such is the cut and look.

Verdict: 9/10
When style meets performance. Great.

Inov-8 AT/C Men’s Mid-Layer review

Designed to cope with alpine trails, this 220g top is best worn on top of a base layer or under a shell. Made from 87% polyester and 13% elastane, it retains shape when stretched so offers good freedom of movement. The half-zip lets you regulate body temperature, making it suitable for both cool mornings and warm afternoons.

Verdict: 8/10
Adaptable top suitable for a wide range of temperatures.
