Pushing the vehicle analogy to breaking point, the Ultra Raptor is more akin to a top-end Land Rover than the Salomon’s armoured tank. The lugs, whilst not overly aggressive looking, offered a surprisingly good level of grip in all but the deepest mud and La Sportiva’s Impact Brake System provided a satisfying bite when descending steep terrain. The upper feels reassuringly bombproof with a substantial toe guard for protection and an abrasion resistant mesh. They’re definitely built more for mountain durability than speed, but the ample cushioning ensures an exceptionally comfy ride and they are certainly well suited to longer distances.
Chunky and comfy all-terrain shoe, best for mountains and long distance.
