Strangely, despite the zero-drop nature of Altra shoes, my running took very little time to adapt to the Olympus 2. The Foot-Shape toe box feels a little weird at first but the extra splay-space and lack of rub points feels more and more natural the more you run in them – they were one of the comfiest shoes on test out of the box.

The cushioning is nice and bouncy and although the 36mm cushioned platform is quite high, you don’t lose too much trail feel – partly due to the lack of heel drop. It’s never going to be the most nimble shoe in the world, but it compares favourably with the Hoka One One in this respect. The Vibram sole doesn’t look anything special but is surprisingly effective on anything other than deep mud.

Best for ULTRA RACES. Zero-drop won’t be for everyone but the bouncy ride and toe-box should keep a smile on your face as the miles rack up.
