A super-lightweight pack designed specifically for multi-day running, cycling and adventure racing. The soft back system carries 25 litres of kit well but requires careful packing for comfort. Well-featured for running with a wide zip opening, large zipped hip pockets, a zipped lid pocket and external wand pockets.

Verdict: Lightweight and well-featured; a top choice for racing.

Vaude Trail Spacer 18 backpack review

This larger addition to Vaude’s Trail Spacer range combines eco-friendly construction with class-leading performance. The woven back pad is comfortable, supportive and low-waste, while the main pack is PFC-free and features large zipped wand pockets, chest pockets and stretchy stash pockets in a really comfortable race vest-style design.  

Verdict: Outstanding run-specific pack that’s stable and well featured.

Alpkit Presta backpack review

Designed as a multi-activity pack, the 20-litre Presta carries well with minimal bounce thanks to the hip belt and compression system. It’s a great everyday bag with zip access to the main compartment, simple but useful features such as zipped hip and lid pockets and large elasticated stash pockets.

Verdict: A great multi-activity pack that’s good on the run.

Verdict: Perfect for epic multi-day adventures, solo or racing. 

Inov-8 All Terrain 25 backpack review

Designed for longer trips or fast and light alpine adventures, this pack carries weight very well and adjusts to different back sizes for a great fit. It is a bit on the heavy side but the support and protection offered, combined with useful stash pockets and a tough base fabric, make it a well-featured and useful pack.

Verdict: Good for carrying heavier loads in comfort. 

Osprey Duro 15 backpack review

The new Duro 15 is available in two back sizes offering a great fit with no bounce. The selection of zipped and stretch pockets keeps everything organised and easily accessed on the go. It’s fairly expensive but the build quality is outstanding and there’s a 2.5-litre hydration system and 2 x 500ml soft flasks included.

Verdict: Comfortable and well-featured; ideal for fastpacking.

Camelbak Octane 16X backpack review

The well-designed zip front on this rucksack-style pack means it expands to fit your kit. Featuring eight exterior pockets, including four on the harness for easy access on the go, it also includes a three-litre hydration bladder, reflective details and helmet storage. Good for commutes and adventures on foot or bike.

Verdict: Versatile and comfortable for bike or run.

OMM Classic 25 backpack review

The Classic pack has evolved over the years but remains one of the best for multi-day, multi-sport adventures. Features include removable sleeping/back pad, zipped lid and hip pockets and adjustable mesh side and front pockets for waterproofs and other gear. Good adjustment but may not fit smaller runners so well.

Verdict: Well-designed, well-featured mountain marathon pack.

Salomon Skin Pro 15 Set

This fantastic-looking, brilliantly versatile pack is designed for multiple sports and body shapes. It’s lightweight, stretchy and superbly comfortable, with five pockets plus an easy-access main compartment. The versatile, stable gear carrying system can attach poles, ice axes and a helmet. PVC-free and includes hydration bladder.

Verdict: Comfortable, well-featured and brilliantly versatile.

With its neat looks and thoughtful design, this durable, versatile pack is made for moving fast and light over technical terrain. For a rucksack-style pack it’s extremely comfortable to run in, with a padded harness and breathable back system. Features zipped hip and lid pockets and stretch pockets on the front and sides.

Verdict: Great looks; women’s-specific comfort for every adventure.

Gregory Maya 22 (women's)

Billed as a multi-use active trail pack, the Maya is a classic rucksack design. Despite being women’s-specific it was tricky to get it comfy enough to run in. Featuring a fully-unzippable main compartment, hip belt pockets, side pockets and expandable helmet storage it’s durable and great as a travel bag and for general use.

Verdict: Durable and plenty of storage; good for active travel.

Ultimate Direction Fastpack 25

The large main compartment is excellent for bulkier items such as sleeping bags and tents, making this a great choice for self-sufficient, multi-day adventures. Stretch front and side pockets plus two bottle holder and zipped pockets on the front mean everything’s just where you need it. The back length is on the long side.

Verdict: Great for longer adventures; may not suit shorter backs.
