Weight: a maximum of 118g for the large size
The manufacturers say: A revolutionary running jacket featuring the lightest and most breathable GORE-TEX® innovation. The new permanent beading surface enables you to remain fast, comfortable and dry even on high-intensity runs and in all weathers. Features SHAKEDRY™ Product Technology.
Tested by: Helen Milbank, who runs around three miles every morning, all year round, at a moderate pace (running 10-minute miles).
Good points: In a nutshell, it does what it claims to do. Permanently repel water? Yes, even in heavy downpours. The lightest and most breathable GORE-TEX® running jacket available? Yes, so light (just a smidge over 100g) it feels as though you’ve nothing on over bare skin. Waterproof, windproof and very packable, staying comfy to wear across a broad range of weather conditions? Yes, yes, yes and yes.
As someone who usually runs in an old fleece I’ve been blown away by this piece of kit. I wear it with the same old strappy running top underneath and it’s kept me warm during the coldest of cold snaps, then stopped me overheating in the spring sunshine. How? Witchcraft surely. Though the manufacturer claims it’s all due to its high tech-iness. Largely the SHAKEDRY™ material, which means it dries within minutes of reaching shelter and a vaguely warm room if you’ve got sodden wet out on a run; and its breathability, which is pretty epic as the temperature climbs.
There’s a hood that’s slightly peaked and can be tightened by a drawstring and toggle – which rolls up and tucks under the collar – and two zipped side pockets for stashing keys and a mobile. It feels very soft against bare skin, and a US size medium /EU 38 sits well on my hips (I’m 5ft 3in and fairly short in the body).
Bad points: This wins no prizes for good first impressions, but don’t be put off: it might look like a flimsy inner that’s lost its smart jacketed outer, but it really can perform on its own. However, I do have to say it’s noisy to wear – I rustle as I jog along! – and it’s not exactly blindingly high-vis, though the logos are reflective.
