Organisers of the UTMB have announced an event in the Pyrenees will be the latest addition to its international stable.

Val d’Aran by UTMB on July 3-5 2020 will become the fifth event in the UTMB family. Capitalising on the success of the Alps-based ultra, the 17th edition of which was staged last week, the world-famous event now lends its brand to other races around the world. Runners looking for a UTMB entry thus have an alternative route to the lottery system.

The inaugural Val d’Aran by UTMB will involve three races - at 160km, 101km and 55km - allowing for 4000 entries.

The main race will take runners around 160km of the Val d’Aran, passing through mountains, valleys and the most spectacular sites of the region.

Registrations will open on October 7.

Catherine Poletti, UTMB Group co-director, said: “We are excited to reveal the courses for Val d’Aran by UTMB and this new trail running event will allow us to further enrich what UTMB offer in term of terrain diversification. It will provide a real test for trail runners who want to explore the Pyrenees and discover a new stunning mountainous course with a strong characterisation, differing from the Alpine one.

“This year at UTMB, Spanish runners represent the second largest contingent of foreign participants, a clear indication of the enthusiasm for the sport that we expect to see at Val d’Aran by UTMB next year. We expect this to be a hugely popular event, so encourage people to sign up early.”

Oman by UTMB, the next stop on the tour on November 28-30, will this year feature a 170km and 55km, in addition to the main 130km. Gaoligong by UTMB will be staged on March 21-23 2020. The second edition of the Ushuaia by UTMB in Argentinian Patagonia will be held on April 5-7 2020.
