A desert race for Saharawi refugee children and an once in a lifetime opportunity
The date for the only international marathon in the Sahara has been set for February 27 in 2019. London-based Sandblast charity, is launching its campaign to recruit a minimum of twenty participants. It hopes to raise £40,000 to expand Stave House in the Sahara project,an early learning music and English language programme, supported by the London College of Music. Runners who raise a minimum of £3000 will have all their trip expenses covered. The runners can sign up to run a full marathon, half marathon, 10km or 5km.
They will spend a week in the Smara camp from Feb 24 to March 3rd and be hosted by a local refugee family, giving participants the chance to experience the unique hospitality of this desert community. The Saharawis have been displaced in the Saharan desert of South-West Algeria near the town of Tindouf for over 40 years. They fled their homeland of Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, when conflict broke out there in 1975.
Sandblast will hold fundraising screening events in the coming months to inspire people to join. The first film screening of critically acclaimed ‘Life is Waiting” by Iara Lee will be on Sunday, June 17 in Muswell Hill.
