Damian Hall: top GB male trail runner

Damian Hall, Beth Pascall, Kilian Jornet and Courtney Dauwalter have emerged as winners in our poll to find the top British and international trail runners of 2018.

After fourth and fifth respectively in the Ultra-Trail du Tour du Mont Blanc in September, Pascall and Hall took your vote in the GB stakes. The pair’s exploits in jointly smashing the Cape Wrath Trail fastest-known time this month were no doubt fresh in the memories too.

Pascall, who landed at fifth on the Ultra Trail World Tour rankings for the year, had 39% of the vote, finishing narrowly ahead of veteran ultra-challenge record breaker Nicky Spinks (34%).

Aside from her fourth in the world’s most prolific trail race, she finished in the same position at the Transgrancanaria, was 11th in the World Trail Championships, 18th in the Lavaredo Ultra Trail and won the Eurafrica Trail.

Hall, who is a regular contributor for Trail Running magazine, polled 52.9% of the vote to finish well ahead of runner-up Tom Evans, the UTMB CCC winner.

Thanks to his UTMB result and sixth place in the Madeira Ultra Trail, he was was seventh on the Ultra Trail World Tour standings. He won the Ultimate Trails 55k and was second in the Mozart 100.

Despite a month off due to a broken fibula in the spring, Jornet confirmed his position as the world’s best trail runner. He won the Marathon du Mont Blanc and followed that up by breaking the long-established FKT for the Bob Graham Round in the Lake District. Although an insect sting scuppered his UTMB chances, the Spaniard posted wins in the Sierra Zinal and Comapedrosa Skyrace.

Western States 100 winner Courtney Dauwalter was your No.1 international woman trail runner. The American also recorded victories in the Tahoe 200, Continental Divide Trail Run, Big Backyard Ultra and Ultra Trail Mount Fuji, among others.

Note - our poll nominees included exponents from fell and sky running as Trail Running magazine is an advocate of off-road running generally.
