François D'Haene breaks John Muir Trail record

France's François D'Haene has smashed the record for the 359km John Muir Trail in western United States.

The winner of this year's Ultra Trail du Tour de Mont Blanc completed the iconic route in 67 hours 26 min to take more than 12 hours off the fastest known time.

The Sierra Nevada mountain range trail goes from Mount Whitney's 4400m summit to the Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley, featuring 14,000m of ascent.

The Salomon-sponsored athlete, who beat Kilian Jornet into second in August to claim his third UTMB title, had said he was taking on the record attempt to find a new challenge.
