856g/pair size UK11 Verdict: A superlight speed-hiking boot thatu2019s surprisingly good to run in. Perfect for winter fastpacking adventures.

Although it’s officially part of Salomon’s Hike collection, the brand-new Cross Hike Mid has many similarities in fit and feel to the classic Speedcross, so we took it out for a run. The familiar Contagrip chevron tread is grippy on grass, gravel and mud, while the plush midsole offers cushioned comfort for longer runs. The higher cuff isn’t restrictive but adds ankle protection, keeps debris out, and increases the depth of waterproofing thanks to a Gore-Tex membrane – perfect for winter wading. At only about 50g/shoe heavier than the Speedcross 5 GTX, they’re surprisingly light, too. The fit is snug and supportive but fairly narrow in the toe. 10mm drop.
