The Ultra-Trail Snowdonia is one of five races in Europe to be added to the UTMB World Series next year.

As well as the Welsh trail event, three races in Switzerland - the Eiger Ultra Trail, Trail Verbier Saint-Bernard and the Wildstrubel, plus the Restonica Trail in Corsica will form part of the inaugural series.

With more events still to be announced, the circuit will include up to 30 races, including the UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix in August.

The series will lead to the crowning of male and female champions in Chamonix in each of the three key distances – the UTMB, the CCC and OCC. These three events are respectively categorised as 100M, 100km and 50km based on the globally recognised "kilometre effort" designation.

The athletes will qualify to vie for the overall series titles in Chamonix via achieving top positions at UTMB World Series events.

The top three males and top three females at each of the three distances in each of the World Series events will be in contention for the for the overall title at the the UTMB festival as appropriate in either the UTMB, CCC or OCC.

Runners of all levels will collect "running stones" at UTMB World Series events to use for registration for highly sought-after places in the UTMB.

The Ultra-Trail Snowdonia on July 1-3 takes place on mainly technical trails, with runners choosing from 50km, 100km and the flagship 100 miles, the latter including Wales' highest peak of Snowdon.

UTS race director Michael Jones said: “Heavily inspired by UTMB Mont-Blanc itself, when I launched UTS in 2017, my ambition for the event was to host a truly alpine-scale mountain ultra, with an international profile, here in the UK. Four years later, I’m very excited to continue this trajectory by joining the new UTMB World Series alongside many other high-profile, emblematic events. I look forward to welcoming the international trail running community to Snowdonia next July, to experience our unique mountains, trails and culture.”

Celebrating its tenth anniversary from the 15-17 July 2022, the Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB will reward runners with breath-taking panoramic views including of the notable UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, Jungfrau-Aletsch - the longest glacier in the Alps.

The Restonica Trail, which will take place on July 7-9, is based on the iconic GR20 trail along Corsica's mountainous centre.

The Trail Verbier Saint-Bernard, close to the Mont Blanc area, will take runners across glaciated landscapes, a summit above 3000m at Mont Rogneux, a suspension bridge at the foot of Grand Combin (4,314m) on July 8-10.

The inaugural Wildstrubel on September 8-11 will be another Alpine adventure, offering breathtaking views and 6000m of elevation in the 106km race.
