The 29km/2500m race on September 18 will remain the final of the Golden Trail National Series UK, but travel issues linked to the pandemic mean its place on the international tour has been taken by the Skyrhune in France a week later.
In addition, organisers have announced that the Golden Trail World Series final will no longer be held in Argentina but will be specially organised in El Hierro, Canary Islands, on October 16 instead.
As the UK enforces a 10-day quarantine and two paying Covid tests for vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals coming from certain countries, the Golden Trail World Series says it has taken the difficult decision to replace the Ring of Steall event.
Shane Ohly at Ourea Events, the Ring of Steall race organiser, said he was disappointed but understood the decision. He explained: "It is a tremendously challenging time for many businesses. Anyone involved with events and travel having been crippled by COVID-19. I certainly understand the huge uncertainties that international travellers face at the moment, and the practical restrictions to travelling, such as mandatory quarantining. As such, we continue to see many foreign participants withdrawing from our other events and this news from Salomon is not unexpected.
“We have some sense of the plans from the Welsh and Scottish governments because Skyline Scotland and the Dragon’s Back Race are supported at a national level. My expectation is that by September there will be little or no restrictions for UK residents attending events in these countries. However, I think it is likely that the travel restrictions for international participants will be still in place".
The seven-event Golden Trail World Series began in Spain last month with the L'Olla de Nuria and it has continued with the Marathon du Mont Blanc in France and Dolomyths Run in Italy. The next race is Sierre Zinal in Switzerland on August 7 before it moves on to the Chiemgautrail in Germany on September 4. The Skyrunhe (September 25) and GTWS Final (October 16) are set to complete the series.
