Organisers of the Montane Dragon's Back race have unveiled an expanded programme for 2022, which will include the Northern Traverse.

The Northern Traverse race on April 2-6 will follow Wainwright's coast-to-coast route and will be accompanied by the shorter Lakes Traverse event.

An expedition race training weekend on March 26-27 will also be added to the existing events arranged by Ourea: the SILVA Great Lakeland 3Day, Cape Wrath Ultra, Montane Dragon's Back and Salomon Skyline Scotland.

Ourea recently took over the organisation of the Northern Traverse, a 190-mile self-supported ultra along Wainwright’s Coast to Coast route from St Bees on the west coast, crossing the north of England through three National Parks and finishing at Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast. Organisers promise the event, with 16,000ft of ascent, will be among the most spectacular in the world.

Runners will also have the option of the Lakes Traverse, which will start with the Northern Traverse and go across the Lake District, finishing at Shap. The 60-mile course with 12,000ft of ascent will cover Ennerdale, Borrowdale, Grasmere Common and Fairfield, Patterdale, Kidsty Pike and Haweswater and must be completed in 28 hours.

Entries for both are now open at www.oureaevents.com.

The expedition weekend Rydall Hall near Ambleside will offer an insight for those considering ultra mountain races. Past participants of the Montane Dragon’s Back Race and the Cape Wrath Ultra will deliver sessions on subjects such as nutrition, navigation, and training, including Q&As. The weekend is open to all but particularly aimed at those entered for the Dragon's Back or Cape Wrath Ultra.

Shane Ohly of Ourea Events said: “The Northern Traverse and Lakes Traverse both deliver an English expedition style race that perfectly aligns with the Cape Wrath Ultra and the Montane Dragon’s Back Race. We’re delighted to add them to the Ourea Events portfolio of challenging multi-day races in spectacular landscapes, delivering some of the very best mountain running experiences that the UK can offer.”
