Domestic runners stood out at the Mt Awa Skyrace in Japan, the first race in the 2021 Skyrunner World Series.

Takako Takamura and Yuya Kawasaki came home at the front of the women's and men's fields respectively as the series returned in earnest for the first time since 2019.

Last year's series was cancelled and only some individual races went ahead due to the pandemic, and the Covid crisis continued to have an impact last weekend as no international runners were present.

Runners handled tough technical terrain and harsh weather conditions to cover 33km of distance with 2300m of ascent.

The 14-race series next moves on to the Hochkonig Skyrace in Austria on May 5. Runners' four best scores will count on the overall leaderboard before the winners are decided after the final event, the Skyrace des Matheysins in France in October.

Last weekend, the the Minotaur Skyrace in Canada was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions.
