Joyce Njeru and Petro Mamu triumph at Trofeo Ciolo

Africans on top at the latest race of the World Mountain Running Cup

Eritrea’s Petro Mamu and Kenya’s Joyce Njeru took victories yesterday in the Trofeo Ciolo mountain race in Italy, the 11th stage of this year’s [World Mountain Running Cup](https://wmra.chountain Running Championshipshttps://wmra.ch).

Mamu had a convincing lead of 57 seconds by the finish after 11.7km of running and 640m ascent. Kenya’s Geoffrey Ndungu was second, four seconds ahead of Italy’s Alex Baldaccini.

Njeru and compatriot Lucy Murigi led from the start and, by 5km, had a 50-second lead over Italy’s Alice Gaggi. Njeru gained a gap of only five seconds by the end. Gaggi was another 3:56 behind Murigi.

Britain’s Charlotte Morgan, who said she had recovered from a fall while winning the previous World Cup race in Canfranc-Canfranc, was sixth.

The next event on the World Cup calendar are the Broken Arrow event in Palisades Tahoe, United States, and Zumaia Flysch in Spain next weekend.
