From Olympians to club runners - a headtorch is a must have!

Silva Trailrunner Free

by Katie Kerry |

Given the sun might only be up for around five hours in the winter, it’s no surprise the Norwegian Athletics Federation has finally seen the light and signed a deal every trail runner understands – SILVA is supplying headtorches to the team. Suddenly, literally at the push of a button, great lighting on the move is now available for team members to get some decent training in. And at pace, using equipment like the SILVA Trail Runner Free, perfect if you’re all about speed in the dark. The SILVA Trail Runner Free headtorch presents a new kind of technology where the power cord is integrated into the headband. SILVA named this Free Technology – a comfortable headlamp experience without distracting cords or tangled wires. Featuring SILVA Intelligent Light, you will get a clear view of obstacles both near and far. This means that you get double light beam technology in your headlamp, with light settings that are perfect for running. The unique combination of a long reach spotlight and a close floodlight results in less head movement, better control, improved balance, less fatigue and higher speed. Trail runners have long understood this and the difference a great headtorch can provide. Routes that are strictly out of bounds in the dark become available and, perhaps more significantly, runners can now plan in decent recovery time between workouts. No squeezing in runs as the daylight hours fade – Norwegian athletes can schedule their training when they want it. Mind you, with the Ingebrigtsen brothers currently big news, Norway will be very much in the spotlight this summer. Led by 20-year-old Jakob, the youngest of a trio that also includes Filip and Henrik, they will be hot property on the track. In case you missed it, Jakob recently clocked an eye-watering 12:48.45 for 5000m in Italy this May, making him hot favourite for a gold medal in Tokyo. No stranger to off-road running, Jakob told “We often train in Sandved Park [in his hometown of Sandnes] and I have lots of memories of tough sessions there with Henrik and Filip over the years. It’s a nice place to visit, with a lake and woodlands, too.” And now, thanks to SILVA, parks and woodland like this are available year-round for everyone. If you ever visit Tromso in northern Norway in December, it’s dark! In fact, the sun never comes up...

Difference is night and day

Ultra star Mimmi Kotka on why a headtorch is essential: It makes a huge difference, laughs Mimmi Kotka when asked about what running with a headlamp is really like. “Use a good one, though,” she adds. “It makes such a difference. Especially on technical terrain where you need to plan your footstrike.” And she should know...From having no running experience to becoming a world championship runner in five years, ultra-trail runner and nutritionist Mimmi has quickly climbed her way to the top, winning several international competitions throughout her career. In 2017, she won the 80km Marathon du Mont-Blanc and in the same year she also placed first in the Swiss Alpine Marathon. But best of all, she adds: “You should just go out there and do it! It’s not rocket science, it’s just running in nature.”

  • Battery life will be a key consideration depending on the length of your runs. Also, many torches use rechargable, external battery packs.

  • Generally speaking, the higher the speed of activity the more lumen output is required. But the spread of light is also important to bear in mind.

  • Cost needn't be a barrier – there are lots of decent headtorches out there for double-figure prices.
