England girls win team mountain running gold in Italy

England secured team gold in the International U18 Mountain Running Cup in Saluzzo, Italy, yesterday.

Rebecca Flaherty, Jess Bailey and Amelie Lane placed second, third and seventh respectively to finish comfortably ahead of France in the girls' race.

Twelve countries, including all four home nations, took part in this 15th edition of the event, which was run over 4.5km with 155m of ascent.

USA's Alyssa Sauro took girls' individual by two seconds, crossing the line in 18 minutes three seconds. Flaherty finished 24 seconds ahead of her team-mate Bailey. Scotland's Natasha Phillips was next in 18:43. Amelie Lane was seventh and the non-scoring Eve Whitaker was the other from the England quartet in ninth.

In the team stakes, Scotland were fifth, Wales 10th and Northern Ireland 11th.

Poland's Maciej Lachowsky won the boys' race in 16:16 from Italy's Morosini (16:21) and Alessio Romano (16:40), who led the host nation to team gold.

Scotland's Angus Wright led the home nations runners in eighth with 16:53 as England's Charlie Allmond in 12th (17:05).
