Decathalon brands have always been a favourite of bargain hunters and the Kalenji Kiprun Trail X6 delivers an excellent value shoe for first-time trail runners. The tread should perform well throughout the year, gripping all except (the now infamous) deep mud. The lugs lining the outside edge of the outsole protrude slightly, providing extra grip for angled running at speed – great for weaving through trees. Vulnerable areas along the base of the upper are covered in a tough plastic material for reinforcement and there is decent toe protection. Don’t expect a soft ride as cushioning is minimal and the sole quite rigid, but feels secure and stable on the foot.
A bit unforgiving for long distances but hard to beat as an affordable all-year shoe.
